Helping Struggling Student Writers
Tools for College Faculty Who Are Out of Their Depth
Service Description
Faculty frequently complain that students are not prepared for writing in their classroom and that they are not writing instructors, they're content specialists. What if I told you you could integrate critical writing skills into your content teaching? What if I said you didn't have to revise your syllabus to do it, or read oodles of composition theory? This 2-hour hands-on workshop introduces college and university faculty to a variety of tools to address common student writing challenges. While examples and needs are drawn from the social sciences, the tools are generalizable to a wide variety of settings. We cover tools for: - outlining - literature reviews - topic sentences - use of evidence - structure & organization - concept mapping - abstract writing Time and interest permitting, we'll touch on some tools related to surface issues (commas, passive voice, wordiness). Please note: This is NOT a workshop about AI proofing your assignments or otherwise addressing the use of AI in the classroom. This is a set of concrete, easily implemented tools that will increase students' ability to complete assignments effectively. Both sessions will cover the same content; only choose one.
