In this FREE workshop, we'll explore how the purpose of a book affects how and where we deploy existing scholarship in support of our arguments. Books are fundamentally different from theses/dissertations, which for most of us are our only prior experience with long-form, multi-chapter writing. Failure to fully appreciate this means that the most common feedback first-book writers get is that there's too much literature in the wrong places. We'll use a mix of mini-lectures, demonstrations, and small activities to explore these differences, identify where in a book manuscript scholarly context and existing scholarship function best, and discuss strategies for writing about literature effectively in your book manuscript. This workshop primarily responds to the needs of social science monograph writers; I can and will speak to humanities participants if requested. Users of ethnography and most interpretive methods from all disciplines, as well as users of more conventional positivist research approaches, will find useful tips and tools in this workshop.
