Second books are a different type of monster than first books. With no dissertation to start from, we’re faced with the prospects of pulling together threads from many different smaller projects and knitting them into a larger claim. In this tailored 12-session course, we engage with the specific needs of second-book authors around constructing and centering a larger argument from existing strands, (re)negotiating a relationship with publishers, and navigating the cross-pressures of scholarship later in the academic career. You will leave the Second Book Jump Start Program with working drafts of your core thesis, book summary, and chapter summaries, a working draft of one evidence/body chapter, and clear plans for moving forward with the remaining chapters. This program is designed for participants who: are in the social sciences or humanistic social sciences, have at least 3-4 substantial pieces of writing related to the topic of the new book, have previously published another solo-authored scholarly book, and can dedicate 3-4 hours a day, four to five days a week, for four weeks to this project. This program is also appropriate for those writing third or later books. Package includes intake consultation, two 30 min 1:1 consultations, and feedback on a book proposal (latter two within 12 months of program conclusion). Program includes 5 workshopping activities for feedback, a 1:1 consultation in-course, an extensive hands-on exercise, and course worksheets. Pricing: The Faculty B price tier includes anyone who meets any one of the following: personal salary over $100,000; annually replenishing research funds greater than $5,000; current NSF or other major funder support; department, school or college is providing funding for this opportunity; or tenured at a PhD-granting department or program. Anyone else is in the Faculty A tier.
